ReBlackpool.

Using the website http://blog.reblackpool.com/, you can tell that Blackpool is rejuvenating because it is/was recently under a lot of construction. Blackpool now has a new Shopping centre and car park, Light and sound show, and the final part of The tour of Britain Cycle race is held there. Building the new shopping centre can attract people away from other new shopping centres like Princess Hay and Cabot circus. The builders made sure that the shopping centre was light and airy to make the customers shopping experience more enjoyable. The multi-story car park was also re-built to make the area look a lot more attractive.  The Light and sound show in Birley street attracts many people to watch the show, and as it is in the town centre, more people will go to the shops. The show has been described as "Fab, fun and naturally draws you in". Having the final part of The tour of Britain cycle race in Blackpool means that people from all over the country will visit Blackpool and see what it's like, and when people finish, they will be tired and wanting to relax. Some people might want to look around Blackpool before going home and others might want to stay in one of the hotels.

Sidmouth costal protection

At Sidmouth, there is many ways to prevent errosion of the cliffs, such as:

Rock armour

Rock armour is large rocks that absorbs some of the wave's power. Some advantages of using rock armour is that it looks more natural and they are more attractive. Also they are cheap. Some Disadvantages would be that they would erroed over time and would have to be replaced.

Groynes

Groynes are fences placed on a angle to prevent long-shore drift. Some advantages of groynes are that it slows dorn long-shore drift. A disadvantage is that they arn't very attractive and they have to be replaced because they can rot.

Sea wall

A sea wall is a big concreate wall that stops waves from hitting the cliffs. Some advantages of  a sea wall it that it prevents waves from erroding the cliffs, and also prevents flooding. Its disadvantages are they are very expencive to built, and when the wave hits the wall, the backswash becomes more powerfull.

Explain why a named settlement you have studied can be considered sustainable.

Bed Zed is a sustainable town in Hackbridge, London. The 3 requiremnets of sustanibility is Economy, Environment and Social. Bed Zed is considered sustanible because they encourage walking and cycling rather that driving, also there is a limited amount of parking spaces so more people will walk/cycle to places instead of walking. However, people with energy efficient car will have priority over people who dont. Bed Zed is also within walking distance to a few different train stations for easy access to different places with out driving, and busses run through there.

Bed Zed uses as less energy was possible by making the wall of the houses very thick to keep them warm in the winter and cool in the summer so ther houses wont need central heating. The homes are only powered by wood chips and solar pannels, so its envrionmentley friendly.

The Zabaleen

Who are they?

They are a group of Christians who collect rubbish from Cairo, and recycling as much of it as they can.

Where do they live?

On the outskirts of Cairo, in a place called 'Garbage city'

How do they make a living from rubbish?

They dont get paid for their work so they have to make use of all the rubbish that is thrown away. They have to buy their food cheaply and the things that cant be recycled are sold.

In what ways do the Zabaleen offer a sustainable solution to waste disposal?

They recycle as much stuff as they can instead of throwing it away. Also they give any food waste to their pigs.

What problems do they face?

As more people are immigrating to Cairo, there will be more rubbish thrown away. The Zabaleen might not be able to collect it all, and they are looked down at by all the people living in Cairo. All their pigs were killed by the government because of swine flu, and the government hired dustbin men to collect the rubbish, so the Zabaleen are loosing their jobs.

Some examples of infastructue improvements would be Schools, Daycare centers, play parks and counseling.

Give some examples of community projects:

Some examples of community projects would be After school programs and Leadership activities.

Why has the scheme been successful?

The scheme has been successful because it has improved Millions of people lives and had offered the chance for them to get a education so they can get jobs and earn heir on money. It is also a safer environment to live in because the streets have been opened up so the police can come in if there was an emergency.

Regenerating Exeter’s City Centre – a case study of Princesshay

1.    Describe the location of Exeter in a short "Twitter" style comment (using 140 characters or less) Exeter is to the North-west of Wellington and to the South of Tiverton. It’s also quite close to Cullompton, Crediton, Exminster and Topsham.

2.    What do you think is meant by the term "urban redevelopment" I think that Urban redevelopment is when an old, run down area is replaced, looking more new and modern. It could also be restored with some of the area’s original features.

3.    Explain the reasons why Exeter City Council decided to redevelop Princesshay. Based on the photographic evidence, do you agree with them?   Thomas Sharp was asked to reconstruct the damaged areas of Exeter from after the war. After the idea of rebuilding and restoring the bombed areas was rejected, it was decided that they would do urban renewal so they replaced it all with Morden buildings, wider pavements and pedestrian areas. In the end the council couldn’t afford to go along with Sharps plans, hut some of the city centre was built along his guidelines.
Another reason why the council decided to redevelop Princesshay was they thought it looked outdated and cribs causeway was built out the outsides of Bristol attracted most people there so less people went shopping in Exeter.

I do agree that they should of re-built on the ruined areas, but they should of agreed to sharps plan restore the bombed areas.

4.    List some of the objections by local people to the Princesshay redevelopment.  Although many people were pleased to see Princesshay redeveloped, some were not.  Archaeologists were worried about the loss of historic artefacts. Local people were concerned by the increase in traffic, increase in the city’s population and more crime.

5.    Define the following terms used in the resource:
Mixed land use
– where there is a mixture of residential, business and leisure all in the same area of land.

Conservation- is where a building is restored and preserving the natural environment.

Revitalize- is when you bring an area back to life and making it look more modern and a more exiting place to be.

Regeneration – is when you keep something the same but making it look a bit more modern.

Sustainable urban redevelopment -   is meeting the social needs of people whilst conserving the environment and enhancing the local economy.

Section 106 agreement - These agreements are a way of delivering or addressing matters that are necessary to make a development acceptable in planning terms. They are increasingly used to support the provision of services and infrastructure, such as highways, recreational facilities, education, health and affordable housing.

6.    Do you think that Princesshay has revitalized the CBD of Exeter? Explain your answer using evidence from the virtual tour. I think that Princesshay was a good example of revitalisation as it looked run down and derelict before and now it looks modern and attracts more people to Exeter. Also there are many more shops, apartments, cafes, bars and restaurants around.

7.    Is Princesshay a good example of a sustainable redevelopment? How far does it address the three components of sustainability? – Princesshay is a good example of sustainable redevelopment as it contains the three components to make it successful. They are economic, environmental and social.
